Broccoli Can Help Asthmatics

Lifenesia - Laboratory testing by the university revealed eating vegetables from the cruciferous family which also includes kale, cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower and bok choy, could even reverse lung damage.

Initial findings of the study, which is still its early stages, will be presented at the 2014 Undergraduat Research Conference about Food Safety in Shanghai next month.

Eating broccoli every day could be a new treatment to overcome asthma, University of Melbourne research reveals. Two steamed cups a day of the green vegetable have been found to allow asthmatics to breathe normally and prevent their condition from worsening, providing a potential alternative treatment for those who do not respond to existing medication.

The research, led by honours student Nadia Mazarakis and supervisor Dr Tom Karagiannis revealed a daily dose the equivalent of two cups of broccoli switched anti inflammatory genes and could cause changes the formation of airways.

"Blockages in the airway were reversed almost entirely", Ms Mazarakis said. "People with asthma have damaged linings in their airways and we have found this can actually reverse that process and also help with the reversal of the narrowing of the airways, make those airways clearer so the can breath more easily".

"It is more for the sub set of people that are resistant to the current medication of corticosteroid where hospitalisation is one of their only sustainable options to get relief when they have an asthma attack".

New Treatment For Peanut Allergy

Lifenesia - Yesterday, scientists at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge hailed a  fantastic results. The immunotherapy treatment involved giving youngsters a small amount of peanut protein in powder form over six months.

A treatment that could help millions of people overcome nut allergies may soon be available on the NHS. Children who are allergic to peanuts were able to eat up to ten nuts a day without negative side effects following five and a half years of trials.

Dr Andrew Clark said: "This is huge and it’s a real first. The families involved say that it has changed their lives dramatically".

Among those to benefit is 11 year old Lena Barden, who can now tuck into doughnuts which contain traces of nuts for the first time in her life.

The study is the first in the world to have had such a good outcome, according to researchers.

Lifenesia - Excitotoxins is a substances, usually amino acids, that react with specialized receptors in the brain in such a way as to lead to destruction of certain types of brain cells. Glutamate is a normal neurotransmitter in the brain. In fact, it is the most commonly used neurotransmitter by the brain.

Defenders of MSG and aspartame use, often say: "How could a substance that is used normally by the brain cause harm?" This is because, glutamate, as a neurotransmitter, is used by the brain only in very, very small concentrations - no more than 8 to 12ug. When the concentration of this transmitter rises above this level the neurons begin to fire abnormally. At higher concentrations, the cells undergo a specialized process of cell death.

The brain has several elaborate mechanisms to prevent accumulation of MSG in the brain. First is the blood brainbarrier, a system that impedes glutamate entry into the area of the brain cells. But, this system was intended to protect the brain against occasional elevation of glutamate of a moderate degree, as would be found with un-processed food consumption. It was not designed to eliminate very high concentrations of glutamate consumed daily, several times a day, as we see in modern society.

Several experiments have demonstrated that under such conditions, glutamate can by-pass this barrier system and enter the brain in toxic concentrations. In fact, there is some evidence that it may actually be concentrated within the brain with prolonged exposures.

There are also several conditions under which the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is made incompetent. Before birth, the BBB is incompetent and will allow glutamate to enter the brain. It may be that for a considerable period after birth the barrier may also incompletely developed as well.

Hypertension, diabetes, head trauma, brain tumors, strokes, certain drugs, Alzheimer's disease, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, severe hypoglycemia, heat stroke, electromagnetic radiation, ionizing radiation, multiple sclerosis, and certain infections can all cause the barrier to fail. In fact, as we age the barrier system becomes more porous, allowing excitotoxins in the blood to enter the brain. So there are numerous instances under which excitotoxin food additives can enter and damage the brain.

Finally, recent experiments have shown that glutamate can open the barrier itself. Another system used to protect the brain against environmental excitotoxins, is a system within the brain that binds the glutamate molecule (called the glutamate transporter) and transports it to a special storage cell (the astrocyte) within a fraction of a second after it is used as a neurotransmitter.

This system can be overwhelmed by high intakes of MSG, aspartame and other food excitotoxins. It is also known that excitotoxins themselves can cause the generation of numerous amounts of free radicals and that during the process of lipid peroxidation (oxidation of membrane fats) a substance is produced called 4 hydroxynonenal.

This chemical inhibits the glutamate transporter, this allowing glutamate to accumulate in the brain. Excitotoxins destroy neurons partly by stimulating the generation of large numbers of free radicals.

Recently, it has been shown that this occurs not only within the brain, but also within other tissues andorgans as well (liver and red blood cells). This could, from all available evidence, increase all sorts of degenerative diseases such as arthritis, coronary heart disease, and atherosclerosis, as well as induce cancer formation.

Certainly, we would not want to do something that would significantly increase free radical production in the body. It is known that all of the neurodegenerative disease, such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and ALS, are associated with free radical injury of the nervous system.

It should also be appreciated that the effects of excitotoxin food additives generally are not dramatic. Some individuals may be especially sensitive and develop severe symptoms and even sudden death from cardiac irritability, but in most instances the effects are subtle and develop over a long period of time.

While MSG is probably not the direct cause of the neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's dementia, Parkinson's disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, it may well precipitate these disorders and certainly worsen their effects. It may be that many people with a propensity for developing one of these diseases would never develop a full blown disorder had it not been for their exposure to high levels of food borne excitotoxin additives.

Some may have had a very mild form of the disease had it not been for the exposure. Hydrolyzed vegetable protein should not be confused with hydrolyzed vegetable oil. The oil does not contain appreciable concentration of glutamate, it is an oil.

Hydrolyzed vegetable protein is made by a chemical process that breaks down the vegetable's protein structure to purposefully free the glutamate. This brown powdery substance is used to enhance the flavor of foods, especially meat dishes, soups, and sauces.

Despite the fact that some health food manufacturers have attempted to sell the idea that this flavor enhancer is "all natural" and "safe" because it is made from vegetables, it is not. It is the same substance added to processed foods.

Experimentally, one can produce the same brain lesions using hydrolyzed vegetable protein as by using MSG. A growing list of excitotoxins is being discovered, including several that are found naturally. For example, L- cysteine is a very powerful excitotoxin. Recently, it has been added to certain bread dough and is sold in health food stores as a supplement.

Homocysteine, a metabolic derivative, is also an excitotoxin. Interestingly, elevated blood levels of homocysteine has recently been shown to be a major, if not the major, indicator of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Equally interesting, is the finding that elevated levels have also been implicated in neurodevelopmental disorders, especially anencephaly and spinal dysraphism (neural tube defects). It is thought that this is the protective mechanism of action of the prenatal vitamins B12, B6, and folate when used in combination.

It remains to be seen if the toxic effect is excitatory or by some other mechanism. If it is excitatory, then unborn infants would be endangered as well by glutamate and the other excitotoxins. Recently, several studies have been done in which it was found that all Alzheimer's patients examined had elevated levels of homocysteine.

Recent studies have shown that persons affected by Alzheimer's disease also have widespread destruction of their retinal ganglion cells. Interestingly, this is the area found to be affected when researchers first discovered the excitotoxicity of MSG.

While this does not prove that dietary glutamate and other excitotoxins cause or aggravate Alzheimer's disease, it makes one very suspicious. One could argue a common intrinsic etiology for central nervous system neuronal damage and retinal ganglion cell damage, but these findings are disconcerting enough to warrant further investigations.

Lifenesia - MSG is not a nutrient, vitamin, or mineral and has no health benefits. The part of MSG that negatively affects the human body is the "glutamate", not the sodium. The breakdown of MSG typically consists of 78% glutamate, 12% sodium , and about 10% water. Any glutamate added to a processed food is not and can not be considered naturally occurring.

The food additive "MSG" is a slow poison which hides behind dozens of names, such as natural flavouring and yeast extract. Currently, labeling standards do not require MSG to be listed in the ingredient list of thousands of foods.

Natural glutamate in plants and animals is known as L-glutamic acid. Our normal digestive process slowly breaks down this natural or "bound" glutamic acid and it is then delivered to glutamate receptors in our body and brain.

Broken down this way, it is harmless. In a factory, however, the bound glutamic acid in certain foods (corn, molasses, wheat) is broken down or made "free" by various processes (hydrolyzed, autolyzed, modified or fermented with strong chemicals, bacteria, or enzymes) and refined to a white crystal that resembles sugar.

Since free glutamate can be a component part of certain food additives, such as autolyzed yeast or hydrolyzed protein, it is essentially unregulated when it comes to labeling standards. This allows it to go into food unlabeled as MSG. A label may say "yeast extract", "calcium caseinate", or "beef flavoring", but the product still contains varying amounts of "free" glutamic acid.

This makes it very difficult for consumers who are trying to avoid it. It is also very dangerous for those who suffer severe reactions to it.

Many people who are very sensitive to MSG experience respiratory, neurological, muscular, skin, urological and even cardiac symptoms.

So why is MSG even allowed into our food supply? Because they can get us to eat almost anything. There is such an incredible amount of disinformation in the powers that regulate and control food, that they can get us to consume things with absolutely no nutritional value at all. As long as manufacturing costs are minimized, and we keep buying their food, they'll keep making it regardless of the detriments to our health.

MSG has been proven to act as an excitotoxin which stimulates the reward system of the brain, so we think it tastes better (than it actually does) and consequently consume more. There are a growing number of Clinicians and Scientists who are convinced that excitotoxins play a critical role in the development of several neurological disorders, including migraines, seizures, infections, abnormal neural development, certain endocrine disorders, specific types of obesity, and especially the neurodegenerative diseases, a group of diseases which includes: ALS, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, and olivopontocerebellar degeneration.

Sperm Extractor

Lifenesia - A report on the development has gone viral on Weibo, China's widely used social networking platform, which suggests the high-tech apparatus has made its debut at a hospital in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu province. A Chinese hospital has allegedly introduced machine designed to automatically extract sperm for fertility purposes.

Zhu Guoxin, credited as the Director of Urology at Zhengzhou Central Hospital, said that while the machine could be used for donation, it would likely be made available to infertile couples who found it difficult to retrieve sperm "the old fashioned way".

The machine boasts adjustable height, speed, l and temperature controls, and according to a website advertising the machine for sale for around $3000, "it can give patients a very comfortable feeling".

"This machine is only recommended for patients that had difficulty retrieving sperm - the user must use a condom, but lubricant and chemicals on condoms will affect the accuracy of the test results", he told the Zhengzhou Evening News in 2012.

"In fact, (the) sperm bank has very high standards - donors must go through strict medical examination and they will definitely not use a sperm extractor".

Alcohol Kills Age Adults

Lifenesia - Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) examined data on deaths between. 2006 and 2010 and found that alcohol consumption accounted for almost 90,000 of those deaths every year.

One in 10 deaths in working-age adults might be attributed to excessive consumption of alcohol, a US government study has found. That's 2.5 million years of potential life lost or 30 years off the life expectancy off those who died, according to their calculations.

"We looked at deaths from 2001 to 2005 and those numbers were high also", CDC researcher and lead author Mandy Stahre said.

"So it’s been going on for at least the past 10 years".

Some deaths were the result of the long-term effects of chronic alcohol consumption defined as 15 or more drinks per week for men and eight or more drinks per week for women including breast cancer, heart or liver disease.

Other deaths were more closely associated with binge drinking, which was defined as five or more drinks for men and four or more drinks for women in a single sitting. Of those deaths that occurred as a result of binge drinking, the top three causes of death were motor vehicle crashes (25 percent), homicides (16 percent) and falls (15 percent).

Stahre also noted that alcohol consumption is the third leading cause of preventable death in the US, but it receives far less than tobacco, which is the leading cause.

Australian Medical Association vice-president and emergency physician Stephen Parnis told ninemsn that, while shocking, the study's findings were not unexpected.

"It's hardly surprising that a large number of deaths can be attributed to excessive alcohol consumption, but given the figures, I believe that number would be on par if not more than in the US", he said.

Dr Parnis cited a study by the Australian College of Emergency Medicine, which examined admissions to emergency departments across Australia on a single day in 2013 and found that one in seven patients were treated for injury relating to alcohol consumption.

According to statistics from the National Health and Medical Research Council's 2010 National Drug Strategy Household Survey , around eight percent of Australian adults drink daily and almost half drink on a weekly basis. Having been causally linked to over 60 different medical conditions, including cirrhosis of the lover, cardiovascular disease, breast and bowel cancer, alcohol is the second largest cause of drug related deaths and hospitalisations in Australia after tobacco, according to the 2004 National Drug Strategy Household Survey.

Paracetamol Poisons

Lifenesia - A study that was published in Emergency Medicine Australasia found that from retrospective audit of four years' worth of data from four emergency facilities, Monash University's emergency medicine expert, Professor Andis Graudins L, found that slow-release formulas of the drug used in treating arthritis increased both the risk and severity of a potential overdose because they could not be detected in initial blood tests.

Because certain formulas have been engineered to be released into the blood stream a period of time after consumption, the heightened concentration of paracetamol may go unnoticed until hours later, when it begins to take effect.

Professor Graudins said it is essential for doctors to test patients blood four hours after initial testing to ensure saturation levels have not increased.

"The point of the study was to make physicians aware that the type of paracetamol taken can influence the length and type of treatment administered, and that treatment is generally very successful", he said.

While the incidence of paracetamol-related overdoses won't be reduced, he has also called on local authorities to restrict the availability of large packs (of over 90 pills) of paracetamol to help curb the severity of some overdoses.

According to statistics from the Therapeutic Goods Administration, approximately 8000 Australians are treated for paracetamol poisoning induced by deliberate self-harm without suicidal intent every year.

While the overall rate of paracetamol poisoning is lower than in the UK, Australia is on par with the US, Professor Graudins said.

"In general, if you look at any population of people, they poison themselves with what is readily available, and paracetamol is one of the most commonly available in the household in Australia, American, and Canada", he said.

It is most common in these types of cases because it is readily available over the counter in most supermarkets and pharmacies.

How To Forgive, A Study

Lifenesia - Acording a study that was published in the European Journal of Social Psychology, this is what they found about how we can forgive people more easily if they're punished.

We're often encouraged to "forgive and forget" but we're a lot more likely to do that if the person who wronged us is punished, according to Australian researchers.

Dr Peter Strelan, from the University of Adelaide's School of Psychology, compared how willing people were to forgive somebody who had done wrong by them.

The study included a negligent friend, a criminal offender and a troubled personal relationship, and Dr Strelan found that people were much more willing to forgive if the wrongdoer had been punished and the victim felt a sense of justice.

"If you are able to punish the person who has hurt you, it gives you a sense that justice has been done and it enables you to forgive", Dr Strelan said.

"Punishment could take many different forms. It could be giving someone the 'silent treatment', which in itself is a very powerful psychological punishment".

"Or, in the case of a criminal offender, knowing that a court of law has imposed a reasonable sentence and that justice is being done… may be enough for some people to forgive".

But Dr Strelan said punishment is very different to revenge.

"Revenge is counter-productive, it leads to a downward spiral of counter-revenge", he said.

"When people get revenge they are taking a bit more. If I get revenge on you, I'm saying that, not only do I want you to feel bad, but I want you to feel worse than me".

"Punishment is about making things fair again".

Dr Strelan said good punishment can often come from talking with the perpetrator, and found that the most effective form of punishment involved dialogue in which victims explained the ramifications of the perpetrators actions to them. "If the offender feels bad about what they have done and the other person can see this, it gives you a sense that things are more fair".

Dr Strelan said that punishment can be important for some relationships.

"In your relationships, if someone hurts you, you can't take it lying down, you have to stand up for yourself and be assertive and it does send the message not to do it again", he said.

"If you are able to do that, you are able to forgive and forgiveness is important for restoring relationships and powerful for helping victims move on".

Lifenesia - Not many of the two million Australian women with an occasionally weak bladder like to talk about it, it's as much a part of being a woman as having a baby or going through the menopause, both of which can directly affect the bladder.

Many women over the age of 30 have had a moment or two when their bladder has had a mind of its own. Women experience two main types of bladder weakness. One is caused by bodily stresses such as sneezing, laughing and coughing, and the other is when there is an intense need to visit the toilet. Doctors call this "urge incontinence".

Why does my bladder react like this?

Sometimes an intense desire to urinate can be caused by a urinary tract infection such as cystitis. You'll probably know if you suffer from cystitis, as symptoms often include a stinging sensation when you urinate and sometimes a little blood in the urine.

You should always check with your doctor even if you've had cystitis before, as urinary tract infections can manifest themselves in different ways - normally all it will take is a course of antibiotics to clear it up, and with it the bladder weakness.

There are other causes of bladder weakness, however. The doctor will check if there is a nerve control abnormality, it can happen, but it is rare. Much more common is an irritation of the bladder caused by too much caffeine and certain other foods and especially if you're a young mum, constantly grabbing coffee on the go.

Most common causes
  • Weakened and stretched pelvic floor muscles (sometimes resulting in prolapse) from pregnancy and childbirth
  • Thinning and drying of the skin in the vagina or urethra, especially after menopause
  • Certain medicines
  • Constipation
  • Being overweight
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Vascular disease
  • Diseases such as diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and multiple sclerosis
How can I make my bladder stronger?

The obvious answer is, if there's no urinary tract infection involved, to cut down on the amount of caffeine you drink in coffee and colas. As alcohol is also a diuretic (ie makes you pass water), it is better to cut down on it or avoid it entirely.

Some studies have also shown a link between urge "incontinence" and citrus fruits, spicy foods, artificial sweeteners, milk products and fruit and vegetables that contain lycopene (strawberries, tomatoes, rhubarb etc). Keep a diary of what you've consumed and your toilet habits, eliminate one food at a time for seven to ten days and see if there is an improvement.

Keeping regular bowel movements and maintaining a healthy weight also prevent pressure building up on the bladder, make sure to eat 30 grams of fibre each day and it will help with both goals. Other things you can do include stopping smoking and altering any medications that you're on (in conjunction with advice from your doctor) as these may affect your bladder.

You can also carry out Kegel exercises which are movements of the pelvic floor, through this movement the muscles strengthen and may help to prevent those occasional "spillages". Try these for three to six months - most women with mild to moderate bladder weakness find that they really help.

Many women also find that specially designed absorbent pads, similar in size and shape to sanitary pads, are just the thing to help them put bladder incidents into perspective and get on with their lives.

Burn Fat Exercises

Lifenesia - What's a simple, easy, effective work-out for the biggest fat loss effects? For years they used to recommend uber long sessions of cardio. You'll still see many women (and men) in the gym today slogging it out for hours on treadmills, bikes or cross-trainers with the intense desire to lose that stubborn weight that has hardly shifted since commencing their cardio program.

Why isn't cardio the most effective exercise for fat loss and the maintenance of fat loss?
  1. Aerobic exercise raises your metabolism for up to 12 hours after exercise. High-intensity sprints or resistance exercise (using weights) raise the metabolism for up to 48 hours. Really intense weightlifting raises the metabolism for up to 72 hours.
  2. The body becomes really energy-efficient with lower-intensity aerobic exercise, so you end up burning fewer kilojoules next time you do that exact same 5km on the treadmill.
  3. Loads of aerobic exercise stimulates the production of stress hormones, which break down tissue. So distance runners are skinny, but have more body fat and less muscle mass than a sprinter as the stress hormones break down muscle as well as fat.
You're still leaner than if you did no exercise at all, but in comparison to a sprint athlete, you're a skinny fat person! The results of the exercise science study I was involved in an exercise science study at the University of Sydney where we compared the difference between intermittent sprinting and continuous exercise at a lower intensity. We came up with the following observations:
  • There was three times more bodyweight loss for the sprint group, while performing only around half the total amount of exercise.
  • Higher intensity sprint training results in greater oxygen consumption (during and after exercise), greater heart-rate response, higher levels of circulating catecholamines (adrenaline), burns more energy per unit time, raises metabolism for longer and recruits a higher percentage of muscle fibres within the working muscle.
  • For the same amount of external work completed by both study groups, sprint training came out as energy-inefficient incomparison, which here is a good thing!
Mix a bit of sprint training with weight training to burn off the fat. More muscles are correlated with a higher metabolism, and they also look good. Personal instruction is highly recommended for the following exercises.

Fave fat-burning work-out - outdoor

Interval sprints: Do one or two sets of interval sprints on grass or soft sand. Have a 20-second sprint followed by a 10-second rest. Repeat eight times. It's insanely harder than you think and one set is usually enough. Rest three to five minutes.

Sandbag throws: Fill up a sandbag with about a quarter to a third of your own bodyweight (men can start heavier). Place your feet just wider than hip-width close to the bag. Squat down, tilt forward from your hips, grab the bag and clean it up to catch it under your forearms, keeping your back straight and chest lifted. This action should come from your legs and your hips driving forward.

Once caught under your forearms, immediately toss the bag over one shoulder. Run around and repeat on the other side. Toss eight in total with four on each side.

Rest for three minutes.

You may wish to do another set of throws.

Fave fat burning work out  in the gym

Deadlift, sumo squat stance: Choose a weight that you can lift four to six times with good technique (this will be heavy) and perform three sets of four to six reps. Warm up with lighter weights until you get to your chosen weight.

Overhead squat press: Holding a dumbbell or a barbell just wider than the width of your shoulders, use the momentum (upward action) of a squat to lift the weights or barbell overhead. Keep your torso straight (don't lean back at the lower back) and abdominals braced. Choose a weight heavier than what you could normally lift without the squat. Do three sets of three to eight reps.

Torso rotation: Use either a cable machine horizontally, a barbell rested upright against the corner of a wall or a Torsonator for this exercise. Hold your arms outstretched with elbows slightly bent, draw in and brace with the abdominals as you rotate from the torso using the obliques.

For the cable machine you'll be initiating the rotation from your torso and generally keeping your hips where they are to isolate the midsection. Keep the knees slightly bent throughout.

For the barbell, the movement starts as a resisted lowering action as you slowly guide the top of the barbell to your upper thighs. Make sure you rotate your hips with this one! You'll need to use a hip drive to push the barbell back up to the start position. Perform two or three sets of five or six reps on each side.

These work-outs will not take you a long time to complete but they are intense so avoid overdoing it!

For fat-loss your nutrition and stress management is paramount. Stress sources can be anything from finances to digestion to food chemicals to how well you're sleeping. Cortisol production is a major factor in making your body horde that fat, but we'll get into that in another article.

Suggestions

Get an assessment by an exercise professional before commencing any high-intensity or advanced weight training programs. This includes the exercises suggested above!

Choose full-body movements and keep the weights heavy (under supervision).

Change your program every four to six weeks. This could even be as simple as changing from a wide to a narrow squat stance, or changing the tempo of your lift, etc. The body gets efficient so keep changing the stimulus to avoid plateaus.

The tomato diet a new, mouthwatering study suggests that adding five tablespoons of tomato paste to your daily diet improves the skin's ability to protect against powerful UVA and UVB rays, which can lead to premature ageing and skin cancer.

While five tablespoons may sound like a lot of tomato paste, Professor Lesley Rhodes, a dermatologist from the University of Manchester in England, says it can easily be added to your evening meals.

"These weren't huge amounts of tomato we were feeding the groups (that took part in the study)", she said.

"It was the sort of quantity you would easily manage if you were eating a lot of tomato-based meals".

How it works

According to the study, the antioxidant lycopene is the magical ingredient. Skin-saving lycopene, which is found in higher concentrations in tomatoes that have been cooked, has already been linked to a reduction in the risk of prostate cancer. Now, researchers at the universities of Manchester and Newcastle are also praising it for its anti-ageing and skin protecting potential.

Reversing the ageing process

The study showed that after a three-month period. the people who were eating the tomato-based meals had 33 percent more protection against sunburn — the equivalent of a very low factor sunscreen. They were also found to have much higher levels of procollagen, a molecule that gives the skin its structure and keeps it firm.

But while Professor Rhodes agreed the tomato-based diet "boosted the level of procollagen significantly", which suggested the diet has the potential to reverse the ageing process, the researchers were quick to warn that eating tomatoes does not give you the green light to ditch the sunscreen. Instead it should be viewed as a "helpful addition" to your SPF30+.

Get The Balance

Lifenesia - What does balance mean exactly? Balance means finding time (which really means making time) to dedicate to the things that are truly important to you.

For me, it's my personal yoga practice, eating healthily, sleeping well, study and personal development, and relationships. Given that there are a finite number of hours in the day, it can be tricky to strike a balance between what you have to do and what you want to do. Here are some suggestions for creating balance in your life.

Do less to do more

Take time out every now and then to ask yourself, "Is this really important? What could I be doing right now that's more meaningful to me?" It's likely that you'll find that you spend quite a bit of time doing seemingly urgent, but unimportant things and so neglect the things that are more important to you.

Write yourself a list

One of the secrets to achieving balance is being organised. The more organised you are, the better you can manage your time in favour of balance. Spend five minutes now deciding what's important to you and how to work it into your life. The actions can be big or small and you don't have to do them all at once.

Make incremental changes in favour of balance

You don't have to completely change your life; just do one thing at a time to work towards balance. There might be 10 things in your life that you would like to dedicate more time to. Choose one and make a small, but permanent change in your life that means you are spending more time and energy on it on a regular basis.

Don't be afraid to not compromise

It's okay to choose a few things in your life that are so important to you that you won't compromise on them (for me it's getting up at 5.30 am for yoga which is not always popular with my boyfriend). Decide what these are for you and let others know that these are things that you won't compromise on.

People understand when you explain to them how important they are to you. Sometimes you will need to be flexible, but it's actually okay to not compromise on these important things for the majority of the time.

Get up an hour earlier

You will be amazed at how much more you can get done in the first hour of the morning, compared to the last hour of the night. Try it sometime.

Avoid stress

You might not think that your state of mind has much to do with the state of your appearance, but this is not the case. In fact, a study has shown that chronic stress can actually accelerate cellular ageing, leading to wrinkles.

To help keep your skin wrinkle-free, try experimenting with some stress busting techniques to help cope with stressful situations, such as meditation, exercise or yoga.

Cut down on sugar

While the majority of premature ageing is caused by sun exposure, poor diets can also be to blame for wrinkles. Sugar is a staple of many people’s diets, yet is also a leading cause of skin ageing.

When blood sugar levels are high a process called glycation occurs which damages the collagen in your skin. Once damaged, the collagen hardens, leading to wrinkles and sagging. To keep skin firm and smooth, make sure you check the sugar content of products and cut down on sugary foods.

Keep skin well hydrated

In order to keep your skin supple and smooth, it is essential to keep it hydrated both inside and out. Make sure you drink plenty of water throughout the day to maintain your skin’s moisture levels, and eat foods such as fruit and vegetables which have a high water content.

To moisturise the skin from the outside, use a moisturiser suitable for your skin type or hydrating oils such as vitamin E, avocado or almond oil. Also, it may be worth getting a humidifier to counteract the drying effects of central heating and air conditioning.

Protect yourself from the sun

Premature ageing is often seen as unavoidable and a natural part of getting older, however, up to 90 per centof the visible signs of ageing are caused by the sun, even though they may not show up until years after sun exposure has occurred. To help avoid premature ageing, wear an SPF of at least factor 15 every day (even on cloudy days as UV rays can penetrate clouds) and switch to a higher SPF when the sun is at its strongest.

Get your eyes tested

The area around your eyes can be one of the first places to display signs of ageing such as fine lines and crow’s feet, and these can be exacerbated by unconscious frowning or squinting caused by poor eyesight. If you find yourself regularly squinting to see better, it is important for both your health and appearance to get your eyes checked and invest in some glasses or contact lenses if required.

Eat wrinkle-busting foods

To help ward off wrinkles, try to eat a diet full of antioxidants and omega 3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids help to keep skin supple and nourished from within, preventing dehydration and dryness, while antioxidants help fight against the free radicals that cause wrinkles. Good foods to stock up on include oily fish, flax seeds and antioxidant-rich berries.

Spinach is also a good source of lutein, which recent research has shown can prevent wrinkles by helping to retain the skin's moisture and elasticity, increasing lipid levels and preventing damage caused by free radicals.

Lifenesia - Astronaut reveals how to wash hair in space. If life in space is tricky for men, just imagine the rigmarole women go through as you can imagine, washing hair is particularly troublesome.

Astronaut Karen Nyberg has responded to online questions about life as a lady in space and made a video to demonstrates how she washes her hair on board the International Space Station.

The US mechanical engineer-turned-astronaut, who is a crew member of Expedition 36, tweeted her video saying, "I have had a lot of questions about how I wash my hair in space! Let me show you…"

The video shows how she wets and shampoos her strands in zero gravity using no-rinse shampoo and a squeeze of water.

"It actually feels kind of squeaky clean right now", she says, unconvincingly.

It certainly has great volume. Nyberg also explains how the water from washing is not wasted in space.

"Now, as my hair dries, as water evaporates from my hair, it will become humidity in the hair and then our air conditioning system will collect that into condensate and our water processing system will turn it into drinking water".

Powerful Spice

Lifenesia - The curative properties of clove and its oil are legendary. Not only does it have the highest antioxidant value of any spice, its multiple range of uses are exemplary.

Clove contains significant antioxidants which have been proven in studies to prevent toxicity from environmental pollutants like carbon tetrachloride, digestive tract cancers, and joint inflammation. This unopened flower bud of a tropical tree, native of Indonesia, is also offered to local deities. When fresh, theclove is pink and turns rust-brown when dried.

Clove oil,applied to a cavity in a decayed tooth, relieves toothache. The oil is used to treat skin disorders such as acne, pimples, and severe burns. Clove contains significant amounts of an active component called eugenol. It has often been used in dentistry in conjunction with root canal therapy, temporary fillings, and general gum pain, since eugenol and other components of clove (including beta-caryophyllene ) combine to make clove a mild anaesthetic as well as an anti-bacterial agent.

For these beneficial effects, you'll also find clove oil in some over-the-counter sore throat sprays and mouth washes. On the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) scale used by the National Institute on Aging in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to assess the antioxidant value of foods, clove has the highest ORAC score.

A Nutrient-Dense Spice Eugenol, the primary component of clove's volatile oils, functions as an anti-inflammatory substance. In animal studies, the addition of clove extract to diets already high in anti-inflammatory components (like cod liver oil, with its high omega-3 fatty acid content) brings significant added benefits, and in some studies, further reduces inflammatory symptoms by another 15-30 percent. Clove also contains a variety of flavonoids, including kaempferol and rhamnetin, which also contribute to clove's anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Like its fellow spices, clove's unique phytonutrient components are accompanied by an incredible variety of traditionally-recognized nutrients. Using our nutrient ranking system, we determined cloves to be an excellent source of manganese, a very good source of vitamin K and dietary fiber, and a good source of iron, magnesium, and calcium.

Applications

Since cloves have a very intense flavor, especially those that have been ground, care should be taken when deciding how much to use in a recipe so as to not overpower the flavors of the other ingredients. The easiest way to grind whole cloves into a powder is to use a coffee grinder.

Clove-infused water is used to treat stomach upsets, nausea and diarrhoea. Folklore says that sucking two whole cloves without chewing or swallowing them helps to curb the desire for alcohol.

Cloves were traded by Arabs in the Middle Ages as part of their buying and selling on the profitable Indian Ocean trade route. That's how it happened to reach Europe and beyond. Cloves, along with nutmeg and pepper, were highly prized in Roman times, and Pliny the Elder once famously complained that "there is no year in which India does not drain the Roman Empire of fifty million sesterces".

At Christmas time, cloves can be pressed into an apple or the peel of an orange and used as a warm-smelling adornment in the kitchen or elsewhere in the house. Clove oil warmed in oil burners gives an aromatic holiday scent to any room. Clove, as a herb or an essential oil, is also used to treat magic spells and matters related to Jupiter,  growth, legal matters, meditation, money, prosperity, settling legal matters, and spirituality.

Subconscious Mind

Lifenesia - The most important thing about the subconscious mind you need to know is that it is always "on".

That is, it is active day and night, regardless of whether you are doing. The subconscious mind controls your body. You cannot hear this silent inner process with your conscious effort. You need to start taking care of your subconscious mind. It is vital to maintain your mind in a state of expectation of only good events and make the usual mode of your thinking based solely on loyalty, justice and love.

Faith and belief are the foundation of the subconscious. Do not forget that "you will be rewarded according to your faith". Faith does not necessarily imply religion.

Here are some brief recommendations to help you use your subconscious power for your best:
  1. Your subconscious mind not only controls all the processes of the body, but also knows the answers to the various questions and can solve many problems.
  2. Before going to bed, refer to your subconscious mind with any specific request and soon you will see its miraculous power in action.
  3. Anything that is captured in your subconscious will directly affect you in the form of emotions, circumstances and events. Therefore, you need to watch closely what thoughts and ideas govern your mind.
  4. All experiences arise from unfulfilled desires. If you are "fixated" on various issues and problems, thus will be the reaction of your subconscious mind.
  5. When you have a specific goal or dream consciously repeat this statement: "I believe that the power of the subconscious, which gave me this desire, will embody it in me now".
  6. Stress, anxiety and fear can disrupt the natural rhythm of breathing, heart rate and work of any other part of the body. Cultivate in your subconscious mind thoughts of health, peace and harmony, and all the functions of the body will return to normal.
  7. Fill your subconscious with expectations of the best experiences and emotions, and your thoughts will become a reality.
  8. Imagine a positive outcome of your problems, fully feel the enthusiasm from what has happened. All your fantasies and feelings are clearly accepted by your subconscious and then implemented in life.

Expectations Of Others

Lifenesia - Have you ever wondered how much of your anger, frustration, stress, disappointment, anger, irritation, comes from one little thing? It's called expectation and defines how you view all of your experiences.

Before you cast judgement on others, make sure you understand these three things first. There is an intriguing relationship between suggestion, cognition, and behavior. Psychological science's most intriguing findings may be driven, at least in part, by suggestion and expectations.

We build these expectations in our heads of what other people should do, how they should act, what their lives should be like and how they should behave, but it's not real...it all in our minds, and when we let our minds and ego get the best of us, we become disappointed when those fantasies clash with reality.

Let go of any expectations of yourself that will limit your growth. If you hold high expectations for how others should behave, you will often be disappointed if they do not represent themselves in the manner you expected. It is only your expectations of people that cause you to judge them which ultimately is a judgement of yourself.

Far too many people are living a life that is not theirs to live. They live their lives according to what others think is best for them. They live their lives according to what their parents think is best for them, or what their friends, their enemies, their teachers, their government and the media think is best for them. They ignore their inner voice, that inner calling.

They are so busy with pleasing everybody and living up to other people's expectations, that they lose control over their lives. They've thought about the lives of others so much, that they have forgotten who they are. They forget what makes them happy, what they want, what they need, and eventually they forget about themselves.

Somebody's definition of you does not define who you are. What's a life without expectations like? It means you accept reality as it is, and people as they are, without expectations, without trying to force people into the containers you have for them, seeing things as they are. It's a life where you don't need to be disappointed or frustrated or angry, or if you are, you accept it, and then let it go.

That's not to say you never act, you can act in a way that's in accordance with your values, and influence the world, but never have an expectation of how the world will react to your actions.

So as much as you may wish to antagonize or disagree with a hot temper because somebody's actions don't meet your expectations, make sure you understand these three things:
  1. People are who they are and don't need your approval.
  2. People don't need to apologize for being themselves, and moreover you should apologize for asking them to be something else.
  3. When you stop expecting people to meet your approval, you begin to like them for who they are rather than who you want them to be.
You have one life, this one right now, you must live it, own it, and especially don't let other people's opinions distract you from your path.

Technology And Stress In Children

Not without reason, we remind parents to be careful in speaking. Therefore, the words we spend everyday not only gives impact on others, but also affect our brain function.

In the book titled Words Can Change Your Brain, explained that a word has great power to affect genes that regulate taste happy and stress.

Positive words are uttered such words full of love and attention, encourages the brain to good action. And make the people around us holds good anyway, so that the stress levels can be reduced by 30 percent.

Instead, the language containing feud or censure can take tens of stress hormones that interfere with brain function. Moreover, it could encourage someone to be suspicious and hesitant to others.

Carbonated Drinks Cause Cancer?

Lifenesia - Caramel color is used to give a brown color to soda. It may sound harmless. However, a recent study shows other wise. The dyes can contain chemicals linked to cancer and when the FDA is being examined.

Consumer Reports reported finding levels compound 4 - methylimidazole (4-MEI) more higher than required in a dozen soda brands. 4 - MEI is sediment that may form in the dyeing process.

Some of these soft drinks were tested by consumer reports is Sprite, Diet Coke, Coca-Cola, Coke Zero, Dr Pepper, 365 Everyday Dr. Snap, Brisk, A and W Root Beer, Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Pepsi One, and Malta Goya.

Sprite does not have a level 4 - MAI significant, as well as in Coke products. The highest number found in Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Pepsi One, and Malta Goya.

The new findings have prompted the FDA to examine more chemicals. The agency said it has dye additives studied for decades, but will be reviewing the security based on the data latest, FDA spokesman said to the Associated Press.

This is the second study to find level 4 - MEI is too high on Pepsi drink. Last July, the environmental watchdog group Center Environmental Health announced the findings similar. At that time, Pepsi announced it would change composition and removing step over step the material nationally in February. Nationally, Coca-Cola reduce 4 - MEI in their drinks in 2012 after working with suppliers to formulate the manufacturing caramel coloring, reports NPR.

Federal does not restrict the content of 4 - MEI to drinks, but in 2012 the California require manufacturers to include cancer warnings on their products if consumers consume 4 - MEI over 29 micrograms per day.
