Therapy Could Reverse Type 1 Diabetes

Therapy Could Reverse Type 1 Diabetes
Therapy Could Reverse Type 1 Diabetes. A new breakthrough, researchers at the University of Cincinnati believe they have found a way to reverse the disease that affects more than 188,000 Australians.

At present, Type 1 diabetes, which occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin for glucose control, cannot be cured but can be controlled with insulin therapy, Science Daily reported.

Health, Diabetes, Therapy

The rate of diabetes has risen rapidly over the past 60 years and researchers believe it could be a result of under-stimulation of the innate immune system, which causes autoimmunity, where the body doesn't recognise certain parts of the body as its own and triggers an immune response in children and young adults.

Autoimmunity causes the body's T-cells to attack its insulin producing beta cells.

The researchers found that an antibody called UT18 enabled them to target the innate immune system in diabetic mice, which boosted the activity of the receptor TLR4, effectively reversing the disease.

"We have shown that by using an antibody to stimulate a specific molecule in the innate immune system we can reverse with a high rate of success – new onset diabetes in mice that have already developed the symptoms of diabetes," lead researcher Alice Ridgway said.

"The cause of this reversal is a preservation of the endocrine pancreatic beta cells that produce insulin. These cells are preserved from the autoimmune attack which is the hallmark of Type 1 diabetes."

While past studies into diabetes have targeted the adaptive immune system, this study targets the innate immune system.
Ridgway said that if researchers can catch the disease at its onset, this new technique could work to reverse diabetes in humans.

"This same molecular TLR4 pathway operates in humans in many similar ways though there are some differences, it is possible this new pathway of targeting the immune system could be tested in humans," Ridgway said.

Professor Len Harrison, a diabetes expert from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, told ninemsn that the findings are interesting, but it's too early to say whether they will be relevant in humans.

"The relevance for human Type 1 diabetes remains to be sorted out," he said.

"Some things have not been shown to have the same affect in humans. It's very interesting and similar to previous studies into innate immune stimuli."

The findings were published in presented at the American Diabetes Association's 74th Scientific Sessions in San Francisco.

Natural Beauty Secrets and Tips for Beautiful Skin

Natural Beauty Secrets and Tips for Beautiful Skin
Natural beauty secrets and tips for beautiful skin. Fiona Hogan, naturopath and director of skincare company, reveals some of her best tips. What factors impact upon the look and health of our skin?

Beauty, Skin

Firstly, food. A balanced diet full of whole foods and high in fibre, fruits, vegetables and protein sources is best. Also make sure you get regular exercise - stretch or take a walk every day.

Get fresh air, sleep with your window open and breathe deep long breaths. Sunshine adds vitamin D into our system and gives us a healthy glow.

Hydration, of course, has a massive impact on our skin. Drink at least six glasses a day. Relaxation is another big one, take half an hour a day to yourself and make sure you're getting enough sun.

What foods promote great skin?

Fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants protect our skin from damage, and proteins, including raw seeds, nuts and legumes, help build and repair our skin.

And which foods have the opposite effect?

Harmful foods include processed and refined foods, biscuits, cakes, sugary cereals, muesli bars, ice-creams and lollies. Take-away foods are also a no-no for skin, and eating too much can cause problems, too.

Keep meal sizes small and interesting, taste and enjoy food, and try not to over-eat or over-indulge.

Which supplements can improve skin health and how do these work?

Essentially fatty acids are a great one for skin. Fish oil in particular helps hydrate the skin, as does flaxseed oil. It can be handy to add this to a bowl of cereal in the morning.

Here's the low-down on the antioxidant group:

Vitamin C

promotes collagen-production and improves skin tone. Vitamin A aids healing and constructs new skin tissue.

Vitamin E

protects against damage from free radicals. Grape seed extract is a high-potency antioxidant which protects the skin. Zinc repairs and strengthens tissue. Silica plays an important role in skin strength and elasticity.

How can creams and cleansers make a difference and what daily/weekly routine would you recommend?

Creams and cleansers are great for the skin. A good quality cream free of petro-chemicals and animal products can help hydrate, re-store and protect our skin. A good quality cleanser will assist in keeping the skin clean from dirt and particles that can clog pores and not allow it to breathe.

A daily routine I'd recommend would go as follows:

1. Clean.

Wash and clean your skin daily, it will unblock pores and prevent skin from becoming flat, flaky and appearing lifeless. By removing dead skin cells you will prevent the build up of impurities caused by pollutants, make-up, perspiration and environmental toxins.

2. Tone and hydrate.

The skin requires oil and water to hydrate and create balance. It is best to use an alcohol-free toner as this may dry the skin. Hydrosols are great they add moisture and nutrients to the skin.

3. Moisturise.

A moisturiser will act by deeply hydrating and nourishing the skin (even restoring balance). A good quality product can assist by reducing the appearance of skin damage whilst hydration may assist in the prevention of wrinkles.

Weekly or fortnightly it is a great idea for you to apply a clay mask, which will remove any deep-seated clogs or nasties. Red clay is best for sensitive skin, green for normal, and white for mature skin.

What are some easy changes men and women can make in order to improve the health of their skin?
  • Exercise at least three hours a week.
  • Drink eight glasses of water every day.
  • Go outside and enjoy fresh air and nature — walk in the park or by the beach.
  • Take in a little bit of sunshine, but avoid the harsh hours of 11am-3pm.
  • Once a week, swim in saltwater if you can.
  • Sleep with your window open and have fresh air come into your bedroom.
  • Meditate and relax your mind.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet of whole foods, including berries and watermelon.
  • Don't smoke, reduce the intake of alcohol and coffee.
  • Remember to smile.
